Ainsworth was laid out in 1858. It was named for its founder, D. H. Ainsworth. Danforth Hurlburt Ainsworth was a civil engineer and writer. He wrote the book, "Recollections of a Civil Engineer: Experiences in New York, Iowa, Nebraska, Dakota, Illinois, Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado" in 1893.
