The village was established in 1874 with the construction of the Chicago, Pekin and Southwestern Railroad. The town was named after S.H. Benson of Streator, Illinois, the railroad's general freight manager. A post office was established in 1873.
As of the census of 2000, there were 408 people, 172 households, and 117 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,338.6 people per square mile (926.6/km²). There were 183 housing units at an average density of 1,048.9 per square mile (415.6/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.26% White, 0.25% Asian, and 0.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.25% of the population.
There were 172 households out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.0% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% were non-families. 27.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.92.
