Occupational health is a field of healthcare involving multiple fields dedicated to the well-being and safety of employees in the workplace, with a strong focus on injury prevention and education. It is bordered to the north and west by Pine Island Bayou, which forms the Hardin County line. Texas State Highway 105 forms the southern boundary of the city; SH 105 leads west 8 miles (13 km) to Sour Lake and east 6 miles (10 km) to U.S. Route 96. Beaumont is 12 miles (19 km) southeast of Bevil Oaks via SH 105 and US 96.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,346 people, 521 households, and 432 families residing in the city. The population density was 640.2 people per square mile (247.5/km²). There were 552 housing units at an average density of 262.6 per square mile (101.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.36% White, 2.01% African American, 0.15% Asian, 0.97% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.12% of the population.

There were 521 households out of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.4% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.9% were non-families. 14.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 2.83.
